Functional Behavior Assessment

A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a structured, step-by-step process I use to understand why challenging behaviors are happening and what they are trying to communicate. Instead of simply reacting to "acting out," aggression, withdrawal, or self-injury, we look closely at the patterns surrounding the behavior.

I gather information from the individual, caregivers, and other key people in their life, and I observe what happens before, during, and after the behavior. We consider setting, demands, sensory experiences, communication abilities, and medical or emotional factors. The goal is to identify the function of the behavior-whether it's helping the person escape something overwhelming, gain attention, seek stimulation, or meet another need.

Once we understand the function, we can design practical changes that actually work in daily life. This may include adjusting routines, clarifying expectations, teaching new communication skills, modifying environments, or introducing positive supports. You'll receive clear recommendations written in everyday language, not just technical terms.

An FBA is especially helpful for individuals with developmental disabilities or complex needs, but it can benefit anyone whose behavior feels confusing or unmanageable. Families and staff often report feeling less helpless, more unified, and more confident about how to respond consistently.

Ultimately, a Functional Behavior Assessment is about replacing constant crisis-management with a thoughtful plan. Behaviors become easier to predict and prevent, the person experiences more success and fewer consequences, and everyone involved gains a shared roadmap for safer, calmer interactions.
